Techniques

Otoplasty techniques — matched to your ear anatomy

Prominent ears can be set closer to the head in more than one way. The right approach depends on whether the antihelical fold is missing, the cartilage is stiff, or the earlobe also needs work. Dr. Daniela examines your ears and chooses what fits, not what is quickest.

Mustardé suture technique

Permanent sutures recreate the missing antihelical fold and gently bend the cartilage into shape. Cartilage-sparing, so the ear keeps its natural softness. Most common option for ears that lack a defined fold.

Furnas suture technique

Sutures placed at the base of the ear reduce a deep concha and set the ear closer to the head. Often combined with Mustardé sutures when ears both stick out and lack a fold. Addresses the gap between ear and skull.

Cartilage scoring & reshaping

When cartilage is too stiff for sutures alone, the surface is carefully scored so it bends and holds the new fold. Useful in adults with firmer cartilage. Reshaping is done through the incision behind the ear.

Earlobe & combined correction

Repair of torn or stretched earlobes from piercings, plus reshaping of a prominent or large lobe. Can be done on its own or alongside an antihelical correction so the whole ear looks balanced.

Why choose

Why U.S. patients choose Dr. Daniela for otoplasty

01

Natural, not pinned back

The aim is ears that look like they always belonged on your face — closer to the head, with a soft, natural fold. Not the flat, over-corrected "pinned" look that comes from pulling the cartilage too far.

02

Adults and children

Otoplasty can be done from age 7, once the ears are fully grown. Dr. Daniela operates on both children and adults, and explains the same plan to parents and patients in plain English.

03

JCI-accredited hospitals only

Surgery is performed in accredited hospitals with proper anesthesia support, whether under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia for younger children. Same surgical standards as U.S. facilities.

Results

Natural and proportional, not pinned

Otoplasty done right gives ears that sit closer to the head and look balanced with the rest of the face. The fold looks natural, and the change is yours — not an obvious flattening.

FAQ

Otoplasty frequently asked questions

Will there be visible scars?
The main incision sits in the crease behind the ear, where it is hidden against the head. When cartilage is reshaped from the front, the work is done through that same back incision. After a few months the scar fades and is hard to see in normal day-to-day view.
What age can otoplasty be done?
From age 7 and above, once the ears have reached close to their adult size. There is no upper age limit — teenagers and adults of any age can have it. For younger children, the decision is made together with parents.
Is it painful, and what anesthesia is used?
Most adults have otoplasty under local anesthesia with sedation, so they are comfortable and relaxed. Younger children usually have general anesthesia. Afterward the ears feel tender for a few days, controlled well with simple pain medication.
How long is recovery, and when can I fly home?
Recovery is low-impact. A soft headband supports the ears for the first days, and most patients are cleared to fly home within about a week. You wear the headband at night for a few weeks and avoid contact sports for about a month.
Can both ears be done at once?
Yes. When both ears stick out, they are corrected in the same surgery so they match. The procedure takes roughly 1–2 hours for both ears. If only one ear is prominent, it is often still adjusted with the other in mind for symmetry.
Are the results permanent?
Yes. The new ear position is held by permanent sutures and, where needed, reshaped cartilage, so the result is meant to last. Following the headband and activity instructions in the first weeks protects the correction while it settles.
